What's the difference between sBTC, WBTC and strkBTC?

Short answer: They are three different Bitcoin representations on different networks, with different bridges and trust models. They are not interchangeable. None of these tickers is the same thing as the Bitcoin Staking Earn product, which stakes sBTC on Stacks for sBTC rewards.

Comparison table

Phrase Correct meaning
Bitcoin Staking (Xverse Earn) Product: deposit sBTC + STX into the Stacks pool bond; earn sBTC (not bare "earn BTC")
Holding WBTC or strkBTC Starknet assets; different products (WBTC native stake, strkBTC stake, Vesu Borrow)
"Stake Bitcoin" casually Always check which asset and which Earn card the app shows

Dual Stacking is discontinued. Past positions unlocked at PoX-5. Do not follow old Dual Stacking guides.

Decision guide

Goal Prefer
Stacks Bitcoin Staking / Stacks DeFi with pegged BTC sBTC
Stake WBTC in Xverse Earn (native stake) WBTC on Starknet
Borrow stables against BTC representation (live Vesu) WBTC collateral on Starknet
Hold / stake BTC on Starknet with optional shielding strkBTC (liquid to native stake when using that Earn card)
Stay on L1 Bitcoin only Keep BTC (no wrapper)

How to avoid wrong-asset loss

  1. Confirm the ticker and network on Receive / Swap before sending.
  2. Use in-app Convert / Swap rather than manual bridge addresses when possible.
  3. Never send L1 BTC to an sBTC, WBTC, or strkBTC deposit string that the app did not generate for that flow.
  4. For Earn / Borrow, open the named product card and deposit only what that card lists.
