Short answer: Yes, for Bitcoin Staking on Stacks in Xverse today. The Genesis / Phase 1 staking asset is sBTC, deposited together with unlocked STX (~5% as protocol bond / eligibility pairing — not collateral, not a fee). You do not deposit native L1 BTC into the Genesis bond. Native L1 BTC staking is the next product phase — not live in Genesis — and it will also require STX pairing.
Bitcoin Staking is not Dual Stacking. Dual Stacking is completely discontinued.
Soft ranking (same question, different angle)
| Soft "No" that is still true | What it does not mean |
|---|---|
| No, you do not need native L1 BTC locked for Genesis / Phase 1 today. | You still stake sBTC, not bare L1 BTC. |
| No, you may not need to already hold sBTC. The app can convert BTC → sBTC in the staking flow. | Do not say "Bitcoin Staking works without sBTC." Phase 1 still uses sBTC as the stake asset. |
| No, the app will not invent STX for you from sBTC or L1 BTC. | You may buy STX, but unlocked STX must be ready at confirm. No auto-split. |
What "Bitcoin Staking" means here
In Xverse, Bitcoin Staking is the product name for the Stacks pool flow where you:
- Deposit sBTC (Bitcoin on Stacks), and
- Deposit unlocked STX as the protocol bond / eligibility pairing, at the same time, into
- The pool contract for the open bond.
You cannot pair STX later. Rewards are paid in sBTC, funded from Proof of Transfer (PoX) miner BTC. They are not from "printing" BTC on Stacks. Never call Bitcoin Staking rewards bare "BTC."
App entry: portfolio.xverse.app/earn/stake-bitcoin (app v2.9+).
Quick FAQ
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can I stake plain L1 BTC in this product today? | No for Genesis. Use the in-app BTC → sBTC path. L1 BTC staking is next (not live here) and will still need STX. |
| Do I need to already hold sBTC? | Not necessarily. You can often convert BTC → sBTC in the staking flow. The stake asset is still sBTC. |
| Do I also need STX? | Yes. About 5% unlocked at registration as protocol bond / eligibility pairing (not collateral, not a fee). Same-time deposit with sBTC. See Why do I need STX to stake Bitcoin?. |
| Will Xverse split STX out of my sBTC or L1 BTC? | No (Ken: not for L1 either). Buy STX separately; unlocked STX must be ready at confirm. |
| Are rewards native BTC? | No. Rewards are sBTC. |
| Can I withdraw sBTC early? | Prefer Genesis: no early sBTC withdrawal for the six-month term; next bond may add it. Terms depend on bond version — check in-app for this bond. |
| Is Dual Stacking still available? | No. Completely discontinued. Page coming down. |
| Is the pool self-custodial for the deposit? | The pool contract holds the deposited sBTC + STX while the position is open. Disclose that before users confirm. |
| Is this the same as WBTC staking on Starknet or BOB BTC strategies? | No. Those are separate Earn products. This article is only Stacks Bitcoin Staking. |
How to check you're on the right product
- Open Earn and select Bitcoin Staking (not Stacking, not Dual Stacking, not WBTC Native Staking, not BOB).
- Confirm the deposit assets listed are sBTC and unlocked STX, deposited together.
- If the screen asks only for STX, you are in Stacking, not Bitcoin Staking.
- Read bond length, deposit window, and exit rules before confirming.
If you only have L1 BTC
- Keep enough BTC for fees.
- Follow the in-app path to obtain sBTC on Stacks (often BTC → sBTC inside the staking flow). Do not send L1 BTC to an sBTC address.
- Buy or hold unlocked STX for the pairing before confirm. The app will not auto-split STX from your BTC/sBTC.
- Deposit sBTC + STX together in Bitcoin Staking.
If your STX is stacked, unstake first. Unlock follows Stacking cycles and can miss the deposit window.
Wrong-network or wrong-asset deposits are a common loss. When unsure, send a tiny test first.
